It's an odd bit of kit the BT Homehub. :glare:

Access to it's internal settings are convoluted and confusing, when you get in there there are no obvious DMZ/NAT settings which you can change and automatic firmware updates appear to periodically tighten up your NAT from "Open" to "Strict" in the blink of an eye.

This has happened to me on 3 seperate occaisions now.

I've had several sessions with various people:
With Mushy (our resident acknowledged expert) - we gave up after 2-3 hours of MSN chat as the "usual" settings are not there. From searching various forums it appears that IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE YOUR DMZ SETTINGS TO ACCOMODATE XBOXLIVE VIA THE INTERFACE.

With the BT Online Help Chat - they don't quite "get it", if you're lonely in the wee small hours then perhaps you may like to give this a go but prepare to be confused and frustrated.

Via Remote Access by a BT Operative (with simultaneous phone conversation) - another confusing 2 hour experience with the fella getting you to unplug awkward wires, computer reboots, wanting to uninstall IE and generally failing to make any apparent headway. As a last gasp attempt he finally did a factory default reset which instantly cured the problem.....and herein lies the solution. :D

I've just recieved my replacement 360 and upon testing my connection found that the NAT settings were again "strict".....here's what i did:

Copy & Paste this into your browser - http://bthomehub.home/
Click - Advanced > Continue to Advanced (Login=admin/Pasword= admin)
Click - System > Reset and then > Yes, Reset my BT Homehub > Ok

It seems that "out of the box" the BT Homehub is fine for use with LIVE......it's just the updates that muck it up!

Hmmm...im going to try this on the main PC immediately when i get home from college...this Home Hub is being a PITA.

And those remote assistance/phone calls are pretty tedious arent they shag? He made us reboot the pc once, installed Firefox, a bunch of google rubbish ¬.¬ then chucked a load of port numbers into the advanced settings, selected things under Xbox Live. He says thats sorted it.

I go straight to testing the connections on my xbox. STRICT. *Screams*

can someone confirm that this setting only relates to when your hosting,

if you dont want to host then this wont cause any issues?

If your NAT settings are "strict" then you may not be able to get in a lobby at all.
And if you're hosting it'll cause other people to fail to connect.

So no, it doesn't only affect hosting and it will cause issues if you're not.

what u need to realise with BT is that their 'technicians' are basically poor, uninstalling IE rarely achieves anything, for example, when i changed from the 205 router to the hub it wouldnt let me use it, i followed all the instructions i was given and it still didnt work, while they then repeated the instructions i decided to do the most basic of things and remove everything to do with both the 205 and the hub, the hub then worked.

the first post is the only way, it seems, of creating an open NAT with the hub and i suggest u use that same method

Ive never really had any probs with my homehub, as the guys said above just unplug it for a minute the plug it back in and it sorts it out, I must admit it does happen quite often but hey i get a good connection when its open so im happy :)

yeah same my NAT opened up after unplugging it and plugging it back in after a minute. Sometimes though after a while of not playing of live it goes strict again, and I just repeat the process to open it up again :D

:D hey guys couldnt figure this out myself until now so i googled OPEN NAT bt homehub and found this forum..Sorted it now and theres nothing the updates can do to throw my NAT off. umm it may take some explaining and of course it all depends how your xbox's are set up,but at the end of the day it all comes down to port forwarding.

contact me on [email protected] or DER4NGED on xbl I'll be glad to help.just mention that it's about NAT settings or xboxlive or somthing.

I know how much of a pain in the arse this is lol so i figured i'd lend a helping hand.

only took me 20 mins to figure out , unlucky for the ones that have tried for hours i guess =p

I've been having the same problem everybody and will take your advice but first, does changing to an open NAT affect your WEP protection?

Having your NAT settings open will not have any effect on your WEP protection

I'm going to explain to you fully what i have and what im doing, in the hope that perhaps one of you could tell me at what point and what it is i am doing wrong and how to correct it.

I'm not too clued up about PC's and so forwarding ports and codes aren't going to mean much to me.
So please try to keep it as simple as possible. :)

So i have my Xbox i have an Ethernet cable i have a Bt HomeHub. When i connect the two together using the Ethernet cable and do a Xbox Live test everything runs smoothly, until it comes down to NAT settings which is strict. :glare:
This annoys me because iv played live with strict NAT settings and it sucked took me about 7 years to find a match, in which there was no other visible player.

I've rung Bt, you can guess how that went, "you have to subscribe to our technical group for £34257 a month" (exaggeration).

Is there an easy way to sort this out. Who would it be best for me to talk to? Bearing in mind i havent tried resetting my homehub or simply switching it on and off due to my ethernet cable has gone walkies and im going to have to steal a mates now.

LOL

Any help would be much appriciated
Thanks.....

Jo2H it's a piece of pish m8, I've got the home hub here and only takes two ticks

There used to be a Video on xbox.com a wizard making it easy to set the home hub up but I can't find it anywhere now. Anyway do what it says below and you should be ok mate
