A Patch or a Firmware update won't improve the reading speed of the Blu-Ray Drive. This is a major problem that companies like Capcom and Rockstar (GTA4 delayed due to this problem) are having whilst producing games for the console.

i didnt think the problem with development was reading the disk

That's not true , We dont know the "Real Reason" we just know the PS3 was a "Contributing factor "

Hense the 5gb installation for DMC4, the 4.5gb installation for Oblivion and the optional 3gb installation for Ninja Gaiden: Sigma. This is to help reduce the Loading Times due to the slow reading by the Blu-Ray Drive.

Have you not noticed how long the loading times are for games like F1 and Resistance as well as the initial load for Unchartered.

yeah the loading times are long

but thats not why the development is taking longer, as you said earlier and as daz stated

Development takes longer as there are more processes that have to be coded in because of the nature of the hardware setup. The Core processor and its 8 delegates will force a much different piece of code to develop a game than the setup of the 360 with 3 such delegates. When the process of coding for the PS3 is figured out a bit better the development time may get shorter, of course it may not as its still a lot of code from my understanding over the code used for the same game on the 360.

However, the fact the laser reads slower is also going to be an issue as you will have to find ways around this and that within your code to keep it running as smooth as its supposed to be, at least thats the way I see it. If anything is different between two things that you are creating the same end result on, you have to accomodate for these differences. In the past the differences were graphics and not as much the architecture of the hardware processors. In the present the difference between coding a game for the 360 and coding a game for the PS3 is from my understanding, miles apart.

even more so now as hd dvd is dead

its not gonna give you as much fun as live does but there is a lot happening on psn this year which will improve it some what

It wouldn't be a suprise , Microsoft "Accidentally" said it would "Consider" a Blu Ray add on ... With the death of HD DVD all but officially confirmed ... It may become a reality

Being mainly a pc gamer I do not get into the which console is better debate. Saying that, I did have a 360 and when the games I liked started dropping off I gave it to my daughter who promptly broke it

I am happily playing MotoGP 1,2,3 and 07 on the pc with 2 being my favorite. As Mush and the others know, playing in a good league is great, I hate having to pay to be able to connect to a MP game. GTR, GTR2, GTL and the Race series keeps me going.

When the DVD player on the living room died we decided to get a Blu Ray player as the tv is fully 1080p as others have said, the PS3 is the best value, and if a game that you like comes around you can play that too. One other thing about the PS3 is that you can connect it to your home cinema with a built in optical cable. As a BR player the image quality is great especially if what you are watching was filmed in HD.
