Having previously covered such heavy topics like politics, religion, aliens and people's favourite biscuits (the last being the most controversial of course).

And with this past week's Top Gear's "reporting" on green vehicles, what are people's opinions on renewable energy and/or electric/hybrid vehicles?

As long as it doesn't spoil the creativity of design, be my guest!! I don't want ugly cars, no matter how good they are for the environment!!

My problem with so-called electric cars is that they're not powered by electricity.

As it's not actually a fuel, electricity needs to be generated. This is mostly done at coal-fired, a few gas-fired and a handful of nuclear-powered stations. Not forgetting the minute input of wind farms and tidal generators of course.

So the vast majority of "electric" cars are, in truth, actually powered by coal.

.....doesn't have the same ring to it though does it?

I personally think they will cause carnage on our roads, the number of pedestrians that get knocked down will go through the roof (or over it!) as you can't hear the bloody things. If they take over they must have a stereo system piped to the outside that makes engine noises, just for safety's sake. The TT zero bikes at the Isle of Man were utterly silent and you didn't know they were coming until they whirred past. It needed the rider to make engine noises or summat, it's just not right, lol! The TT commentator came out with a classic line, he said, 'and it's all quiet here at the moment, much as it was when the last TT zero bike came through!'Brilliant!

There's the other thing to consider with electric vehicles too, and that's the 25odd billion £'s that the UK gets each year in fuel duty, that's going to have to come from somewhere...

england is running short of electricity, the government say we will have to import electricity by 2020.do you really think we can run electric cars on top of this!!!

where is all the tax paid for global warming going?

remember this is all our fault.not the people that created these machines our lives now depend on.

Just as bad as Petrol to be honest, Hydrogen is the way forward.

Eh?
:uhm:

Electricity is not a fuel or a commodity or even an element. We cannot mine it or drill for it. It cannot "run out" because it's not a resource, simply a term describing the presence of an electrical charge.

We will run out of natural fuels used to generate electricity (Coal, Gas, Oil) soon enough but it can be generated from other sources such as Nuclear, Wind, Solar or Tidal arrays.

The way forward (as i understand) is generating electricity from Hydrogen fuel calls. Luckily Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe.

and my point is....... why are governments wasting time funding car manufacturers to build electric cars?

remember we fund this with our green taxes !!!

hydrogen is the answer so why waste so much in resources to make these batteries and all these crappy useless electric cars...pointless

ok ill admit its a personal problem i have with electric cars.

i remember reading when i was young about an old couple who retired and spent there time traveling europe in a golf gti.it did 450,000miles when they had finished traveling.it had had 3 gearboxes but amazingly it did it all on one bottom end.imagine even contemplating that in the electric cars we now have with a 100 mile range (if your lucky) followed by a 12 hour charge,is this why scientists are trying so hard to make us live longer?..to make up for time spent in these things.its all making sence now.....

i love petrol.

Well it's been done in a wardrobe and a phone box. Why not a car too.
