Slipping silently between the civilians who are going about their daily business; the Ghosts kitted out in futuristic outfits with the latest high-tech gear complete their objectives to eliminate and integrate the enemy as quickly as possible and without being detected.
Imagine having the ability to use technology which has not even been implemented in the real world yet to your advantage to seek out and eliminate enemies before they detect you, even using Kinect with your voice and gestures to change, fire, customize weapons and command your team. With four player co-op and sixteen player (eight vs. eight) multiplayer, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is the latest installment in the series.
Having already had some hands on Multiplayer experience with the game in October I was keen to find out more about the Single Player, to get some time to chat to the developers and this is exactly what I did. Along with the hands-on we were also shown a demonstration, following on from the E3 trailer, taking place right after the Nigerian map where the Intel leads them to a weapon’s smuggler, the lead of the organisation and they are heading out to check him out. The demonstration went on to show the different equipment and movements the Ghosts could now do.
The Ghosts move more fluently, they have the sensation that that really know how to control their bodies properly.
Civilians react to you and make noise, you need to look where you are shooting not just run in and shoot without care. In a sequence we were shown in the demonstration and which we were able to play later on it demonstrated that if too many civilians were taken down it was game over.
Everything slows down on the sling shot, it allows you to get in the mind of the Special Forces, the adrenaline is pumping and this allows you to pick off one or two enemies adding an extra of dynamics for the player.
Five different scenarios were playable demonstrating how you could complete objectives using different equipment, across different terrain and in different ways, with a developer by my side I proceeded to complete the objectives, commanding my team whilst all the time attempting to remain unseen by the enemy, but also avoiding the civilians in the first two demonstrations through market towns and streets filled with abandoned cars and other vehicles, whereas the next especially the last showed how open the game can be set in a forest, one mission involved shooting from a helicopter whilst protecting a general on the ground, another showed the use of turrets. There’s a certain element of other Ubisoft games in there, Splinter Cell and Far Cry for example, you are stealthily making your way from objective to objective ensuring as in one example you are not losing sight of your target or in another that you are picking off enemies without alerting others, using the environment to your advantage. Although third person, it changes to first person when you are looking down a scope.
Thankfully you have a number of specialised weapons and equipment to use. From optical camouflage, lighter armour which allows you to roll out of the way of danger when prone, moving from cover to cover as easily as pressing the A button and even turning invisible for a while as long as you keep the enemies at a distance crouch or go prone, pressing LB releases special sensor grenades you can throw to light up enemies in the facility through walls and obstacles so you can decide the best tactics to take, an X-ray vision shows up enemies with a grey screen, the ability to tag targets and command your team to shoot or start off the process by shooting one of them yourself and then letting your team take out the rest, to sneaking up behind someone, grabbing them and watching the cool cinematic which follows which are as varied as they are brutal, to using frag and smoke grenades, a heat-seeker sniper rifle or my favourite the UAV drone. The UAV can be deployed to float above, seek out enemies; you can even tag them with it and land it. All of this without having to put yourself or your team mates in danger, although they can be destroyed and begin to smoke once hit.
In a similar way of using the UAV drone instead of putting yourself in danger if a team mate is down, you can target a fallen team mate and direct your team to heal. You can heal them yourself, but if you are a distance away or will come under fire if you go to their aid this is a better option. You can also run by holding down the A button, which is also use for cover and to volt over objects.
Your A.I team mates communicate with you, telling you to get into cover, alerting you if team mates are down, letting you know where the enemies are and the type of enemy, even giving you tips which would ensure the best route is being taken, communication is the key in order to plan the route ahead and to ensure you are using the most tactical way.
Along with the demonstration and hands-on, Gunsmith was also available to play. Gunsmith is exclusive to Ghost Recon: future Soldier and allows you to customise guns using Kinect or with a controller, however to get the best experience Kinect is advised. Using gestures and your voice you can create over 20 million unique weapons down to their inner parts.
Perhaps the most impressive is how this customisation tool reacts to your voice, you tell it ‘Optimise for damage’ and immediately it does just that, reload and it will reload the weapon. With gestures you can change parts and build guns. Firing is as easy as opening your hand and there is even a firing range to practice.
There are many ways to tackle a situation, whichever way you choose it’s up to you, but Ghost Recon: Future Soldier remains a very tactical game.

This has become one of my most wanted games of the Year - right up there with Call of Duty 2012 which I am hoping is an Apocolypse storyline from Treyarch, and Halo 4...
...I am slightly interested in Ubi's Brothers in Arms 4, but not heard anything about it for months and months....
