Hi all,

I am really not that good at shooters but have been looking at mass effect 1 and 2 for a change.

I quite enjoyed Borderlands but did'nt complete it and am torn between buying Borderlands again or giving Mass Effect a go.

Would you say this is a good choice ? if so what one should i get the 1st game or go straight in on ME2 ?

I rarely finish rpg's/FPS games as i don't have the time and they are generally gap fillers.

Borderlands 2 has got me wanting to give that another go but i have looked at Mass Effect quite a few times but never gone there :teehee:

what do u reckon ?

cheers

paul

Hard to judge with the knowledge giving

Mass Effect games all lead into each other and are very story driven which means it would definetly be best to start from the first game, but if your not hugely into role playing games then i doubt the combat in ME 1 and 2 would be enough to keep you entertained as long as others. Also the time it would take to complete them all would accumulate to quite a while.

Borderlands is kinda the opposite with a giant focus on the gameplay and leaving the story out of most of it so if it's just shooting you're after then i would go for that but if your after a good story to throw yourself into or just to do piece by piece then i would suggest mass effect.

Thanks Callum it certainly does look amazing and i do like a good story line

Last game i completed all the way was Allan wake

Got Skyrim for Xmas and just cannot seem to get to grips with that ! Too long and i'm really crap at the magic spells part of it

i mainly play racing games and am waiting for SSX and Mud Fim but really fancy a change sometimes.

cheers again paul

Yeah LOL

Saw that in the new trailer hahaha

Ive had it once but ME just looks so graphically nice but if its got a good story line and its not a long game then it may suit.

I have the attention span of a midge and have minimal tv time  which don't help

Borderlands is the best shooter on the planet, plus borderlands has the best DLC ever made on a Xbox game literally the Borderlands DLC packs they are like a whole new game almost worth of content, Once you complete the game twice, is well worth going onto Dr Ned Zombies and then General Knoxx and Clap trap revolution, Moxxis Underdome is cool too but is not as good as the other DLC packs but still cool Moxxi Rocks, oh and if you download the Moxxi Dlc you get to buy a Bank for your stuff so you can loot and safe keep, plus Moxxis Underdome is a real nice kind of save lobby nice safe place to chill out and load up with friends ready for some killing, is a really good game in my top 3 games on the 360 and it is a more solid game like they use to be on the old Xbox all about the gameplay a really good game...............I think I got Mass Effect 2 hold up I look on shelf ....oh yep I got mass effect 2 it's on shelf and it's the 3rd game near bottom in a stack, yep don't remember any of it lol ....seriously borderlands is by far the better game and it feels like it was made in passion and feels like so much love went into making that game the whole things solid as a rock.
Borderlands is a proper Game mate.
Oh and if you do get well stuck in and complete all the DLC packs and when doing Moxxi Big Tournaments if think Wow this is Super hard to get these Big Tournament Achievements, What do is start the game with a smaller level player like a friend get them to host the tournament then play on there game with your power house player , those bandits go down like sack a spuds spawning at the hosts level and at the end of each Big tournament you'll both get the cheev. Just a cool tip, but once you've played it for long time that stuff becomes easy with level 69 bandits.Posted Image Best shooter ever that game has a lot of character

Oh and on Borderlands you get to fry midgets...
But it's your game, Mass Effect just not really my sort of game I get bored of all the shiny guys, but I'm sure it is a good game too. Really if you like both then get the one your thinking about the most first and enjoy mate. Both must be great games, Capcom had nothing to do with either game.

Depends on if you want a Thirs Person Shooter or a first. Both games are some of the finer games in thier genres. Personally, I'd say grab both. You cana get Borderlands with all the DLC and Mass Effect 1 for probably less than £20 if you look hard enough. Though theres always ME2 aswell if you do like it. Play those through and ME3 may have dropped in price by the time you get through em both. If you like em that is.

Ben

Mech yep ! will keep me eye out for a pre-owned copy for sure  Can yolu tell me roughly how many hours of game play the ME games are if you dont get involved in too many side quests ???
I like playing through the main story and tend to stay away from side quests as i dont have that much time or get bored to easily  . Altho' i must admit with the latest Batman i was rather dissapointed when i finished the main story as it ended quite quickly compared with any other game ive played.

i read somewhere that most games are aboyt 8hrs gameplay but Borderlands is about 40 ???

Back to ME is it best to start on ME1 rather than 2 or does it not matter ? as they are quite different in gameplay design from what ive read ?

cheers

Gameplay wise it won't matter to much, they both have pretty gentle learning curves. Only difference is that if you start on the second one then you won't have as much appreciation for the story.

Story wise the game will make much more sense if you start from the beginning. Actions you make in the first title are carried over to the second, and the same will go for number three. If you dont have previous game saves for the story, then the game will just select those interchangable options for you right at the start.

Thing is, is with games like ME and especially Batman, if you dont take the time to do side quests, you will finish the game quite quickly. I always find its worth to do side quests because it fleshes out the game, and fills that hollow feeling you no doubt got after finishing Arkham City so quickly. These days, games almost rely on you to flesh it out yourself for longevity. Take Skyrim for example. If you do nothing but main quests, the games completable within 4 hours.

I'd say you'd probably get a good 12 hours from both ME 1 and 2 combined excluding side quests n what not.

Also, the thing I find with Borderlands, is whilst it does last a long time. Its primarily because the game itself is rather basic. The missions are essentially all 'Go here, kill this' or 'Go there, grab that' so the developers got away with sending you on trips running circles around the levels doing meanial tasks but that would take a fair time to complete due to combat.

I really struggled to play through Borderlands at times. The shooting is fun, and the co-op is ace but the actual story is so dull that I literally was falling asleep while playing.... although to be fair that happens more often than I'd like to admit lately!

Mass Effect on the other hand just has me gripped from beginning to end. It's one of the few games that I play with no thought for achievements or rewards. The world is so full of life and incidental details that hours can just fly past without realising it. The first game is a little rough around the edges, but is so worth the time and then knowing that your choices and actions literally have consequences through Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 meaning that your trip through the game will never be the same as anyone else's... now that makes it special :-).

Hi all,

Picked a copy of ME1 and am really enjoying it so far.

This will be a real challenge for me as i said b4 i'm pretty pants at games like this but this is one i really want to try and complete.

I don't know if you can help but how will i know if i'm on a "main" mission or a "side" mission ?

I think my main problem is as i don't get a lot of time to play in any one session due to limited TV time (Family), i think sometimes when i go back to the game i kinda forget where i am and get stuck/lost :)

At the momement i have to find the "council" and this has involved going up and down in a lift quite a bit and stil can't find it Lol

Any advice appreciated

Cheers

Paul

Glad you're enjoying it trouty :)

The way you can tell the difference between main missions and side missions is through your 'journal'. The main story missions are classified as 'missions', and the side missions are classified as 'assignments'. The game will always try and push you on and remind you what your 'mission' is, so make sure you stay off the beaten path every now and then so you can take in the rest of the world.
