Last year Mad Catz and Microsoft entered into an agreement to enable Mad Catz to produce a range of licensed, co-branded audio headphones under Mad Catz’s Tritton brand and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 brand. One of these was the Tritton Detonator.

Unlike the official wired headset, the Tritton Detonator Headset has a pair of amplified 50mm speakers which allows for rich bass and crisp highs and is extremely solidly built. If like us you have broken the bands on the official Xbox 360 headsets by either sitting on them or the ear piece has worked its way off then you would understand how important it is to invest in a sturdy made headset which is built to last. This is the first thing you notice when taking it out of the box, it certainly looks and feels like an expensive headset and more like one you would be used to for audio.

The Tritton Detonator Headset comes with quite a lot of leads and reading the instructions we can see why, not only can this headset be used for your Xbox 360, but also for other equipment you may have such as a MP3 player, laptop or phone. Fear not though as it is extremely easy to set up, every cable you require is in the box and most of the cables are for the Xbox 360, an AV cable, USB and RCA connection cable, along with a removable microphone with easily accessible game and mic mute, you can also adjust the volume from an in-line controller which attaches to the headset connector cable and when all connected the leads are of a good length, long enough for you to sit on a sofa with your Xbox 360 at the other end of the room. The game volume and mic illuminates too, so if you enjoy playing in the dark you can avoid talking to yourself! It also has selective voice monitoring, so you can choose whether or not to hear your own voice through the headset.

What I first noticed when listening through these using a laptop playing music is the bass, I have a pair of Sony headphones which I usually use and the Tritton ones compare well to these, so much so I have switched to the Tritton ones. They are also very clear and balanced, on Xbox Live you can hear people speaking extremely well and they can hear you without fault. You can easily remove the mic too when you are not using it, avoiding having it in front of your face when you are playing a single player game or listening to music.

Being fairly lightweight they sit comfortable and have an adjustable band, in fact they are so comfortable after a while you forget they are there. They also block out any external sound, so you can completely immerse yourself in your game or music, but beware of people in your house trying to get your attention because you just won’t hear them!

The Tritton Detonator Headset is lightweight, comfortable, and adaptable and has good bassy, quality sound. It seems Tritton have thought of everything, from gamers playing in the dark, to a removable mic. These come with my recommendation.

Did you find a strange bug with the SVM? I bought these for my brother in law at Christmas and the SVM was so over powered that all you could hear was an exaggerated echo of the noise coming from the room! I could even hear the fridge humming through it (from the other room!) it was that sensitive - although it seemed to work fine for everyone at the other end :)
